FROM SPONSORED STUDENT TO SELFRELIANT. SHERYL’S JOURNEY OF INDEPENDENCE AND GROWTH
For Sheryl Obonyo, Adroit Facilities Limited became more than a workplace — it became the bridge between education, financial independence, and a future she could shape for herself. Her story reflects the transformative power of dignified work for young people from low income backgrounds.
Before Adroit: A Determined Student Facing Financial Barriers
When Sheryl first encountered Adroit, she was pursuing a Coxswain Course at the Kenya Maritime Authority, sponsored by her county government.
But despite her ambition, she faced a challenge familiar to many young people: no income, no independence, and no way to meet basic needs without relying on her struggling parents.
Commuting to school was difficult. Personal necessities were often out of reach.
My situation was not very good. I had no income, and there were things I needed that I couldn’t always ask my parents for.
The lack of financial stability made it hard to fully focus on her studies and longterm goals.
The Opportunity: Training, Employment, and a Supportive Environment
Sheryl heard about Adroit through a friend who spoke highly of the company’s supportive culture. She joined Adroit Academy, where she completed training in:
Basic housekeeping
Health and safety
Customer service
After completing her industrial attachment, she began working as a reliever and, within two months, secured a permanent placement—marking her transition into stable, income-generating employment.
From the outset, she experienced a supportive work environment that allowed her to learn and grow.
This is the heart of Adroit’s youth model: training + mentorship + dignified work+career mobility.
Balancing Work and Education: A Pathway to Her Dreams
With her new income, Sheryl enrolled in a Human Resource course—her long-term career interest—while working at Adroit. Employment gave her structure, purpose, and protection from the social pressures many youths face — including drugs, early marriages, and risky behaviour.
This job has helped me further my education. I am able to pay my fees and stay focused.
Access to employment enabled Sheryl to do something critical: continue her education while earning.
Economic Independence and Personal Growth
With a steady income, Sheryl transitioned from financial dependence to independence.
Before, everything was catered for by my parents. Now I am an independent young lady.
This shift strengthened her confidence, decision-making, and sense of responsibility—key foundations for long-term success.
Extending Impact to her family
Sheryl’s success quickly extended beyond herself. Coming from a low income family, she was determined to uplift those around her.
Through her earnings and access to financial services, she has been able to:
Support her parents from a low-income background
Build a house for her mother
Help her sister start a small business
Now I can say I have accomplished something through my own effort.
Looking Ahead: A Future Filled with Possibility
Sheryl is focused on completing her HR course and continuing to grow her income and opportunities. Her long-term goal is to build a stable career and improve her family’s future.
When describing Adroit, she highlights the environment that made her growth possible:
It is a responsible company that cares for its employees. They are patient, understanding, and supportive.
Her journey illustrates what becomes possible when young people are given access to skills training, dignified work, and pathways to independence.
